Frank McAvennie slams Celtic star who 'hasn't been up to it' amid transfer links to Leeds United

Celtic fans would have heard a lot about the San Francisco 49ers in recent times.

That’s because the 49ers Enterprise, who own Leeds United, have invested in Rangers, as they bid to stop Celtic’s dominance in Scottish football.

Another way to do that is by buying some of Celtic’s best players, and making Brendan Rodgers’ side weaker, as Leeds’ name has hovered above Parkhead for the wrong reasons following the opening of the 2025 summer transfer window.

Leeds earned promotion to the Premier League last season, and now they are back in the elite, they are looking to heavily invest in their squad, as they bid to stay amongst the best of the best.

For the last two seasons in England’s top-flight – all the promoted clubs – Sheffield United, Burnley, Luton Town, Southampton, Ipswich Town and Leicester City, have all been relegated.

And there have been suggestions that Leeds could be looking towards Celtic’s direction to boost their backline.

Cameron Carter-Vickers questioned amid transfer links to Leeds United

Leeds are keen on Cameron Carter-Vickers, with the centre-back a regular for Celtic and a key player for Rodgers.

But Frank McAvennie, after being told about these links, isn’t so sure about the player and the type of performances he has been putting in.

MORE CELTIC STORIES

Speaking on his Let Me Be Frank Podcast, McAvennie says Carter-Vickers ‘hasn’t been up for it’ and Celtic can ‘get more from him’.

Simon Houston stated: “So, Cameron Carter-Vickers, there is supposedly a bit of interest from Leeds United sniffing around.”

McAvennie responded: “Another one. I don’t think he has been up to what he can do. I really don’t. I think so (Carter-Vickers is going through the motions).

“Listen, he is there. He is a leader when Callum (McGregor) isn’t there. He is the boss and the captain. But you can get more from him.

Every Carter-Vickers season at Celtic compared

Carter-Vickers came through the ranks at Tottenham Hotspur, but he didn’t play for the London club in the Premier League.

After several loan spells, including in the English Championship, the USMNT international eventually joined Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic in 2021, before signing a permanent contract in 2022.

The issue with Carter-Vickers, as will be illustrated above, is his inability to play an entire season without getting injured.

You need to bear in mind, Celtic play in Europe, and usually go very deep or win the domestic cups outright, yet, during his time at the club, the most games he has played in a single season is 45.
