Marc Guehi to Liverpool transfer latest -'bargain'deal, ideal welcome gift, ex-manager verdict

Marc Guehi

Marc Guehi has emerged as a candidate to join Liverpool this summer

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has emerged as a candidate to replace Jarell Quansah at Liverpool this summer. So far, the Reds have signed Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

Milos Kerkez is also set to be complete his move from Bournemouth following the arrival of 20-year-old goalkeeper Armin Pecsi from Puskas Akademia. While the ECHO understands that the Reds are prioritising a young centre-back to replace the departing Quansah, the club remains relaxed and is taking a patient approach in finding the right player.

But Guehi has emerged as a strong option to bolster the ranks and is considered a favourite despite long-term interest from Newcastle United. Eddie Howe's side had up to four bids rejected for the defender last summer, with the highest offer reaching £65million.

But with his contract now entering the final year and Palace resigned to his departure, the Eagles are unlikely to command such a high fee.

With that said, the ECHO has taken a look at the latest news surrounding Guehi.

Guehi 'monitored for a number of years'

The ECHO understands that Guehi has been on Liverpool’s radar for several years, well before he became a top Premier League centre-back.

The club is also well acquainted with the quality of the Chelsea academy, having signed promising talents like Rhian Brewster, Dominic Solanke and Rio Ngumoha from the London club in recent years.

Cut-price deal

With the defender's contract expiring next summer, clubs have the chance to sign the 24-year-old for less than his usual market value. Earlier this year, reports claimed that Palace had placed a £70 million valuation on their defender.

Guehi 'preference'

According to Football Insider, Guehi has told friends that he favours a move to Liverpool over other interested clubs.

Perfect welcome gift

If the Reds decide to pursue Guehi this summer, they could have the perfect transfer gift ready.

Should the deal come to fruition, they’ll need to assign the England international a squad number for his time at L4.

Several numbers are available, including a historic one. Liverpool could offer Guehi the No. 6 shirt, which has been vacant since Thiago Alcantara left in the summer of 2024.

The number has been worn by club legends like Alan Hansen and Emlyn Hughes.

Wordless message

Amid the speculation of a possible move to Anfield, Guehi has posted a message on social media. The 24-year-old is currently on holiday in the United States and posted on Instagram a series of photos of himself in New York City.

Guehi accompanied the post with a caption that featured just a red apple emoji, a reference to New York's popular nickname, 'The Big Apple'. The post to Guehi's 187,000 followers received more than 9,000 likes, including one from former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.

Michael Beale verdict

"He was a really shy boy but came to life on the pitch," former Chelsea and Liverpool Academy coach Beale told Sky Sports last summer.

"He was a hugely well-mannered young man. I can't think of too many stories of mischief! His discipline has been driven by the family but even when he was very young compared to the other boys he was always very focused, working hard in every session.

"He never missed a session that I can remember. He was always a defender. He was like a rash on the forwards, aggressive in the tackle. He liked to keep his game very simple and then pass it to the midfielders or into the forwards quite quickly and he hasn't changed from that. You see how aggressive he is 'locking down' and stealing possession. But he's very calm when he's defending."

He continued: "His reading of the game and his athleticism gets him a yard on his centre-forward. He shows a huge amount of confidence to play on the left side and his technical upbringing from Chelsea means he can use his left foot, albeit he is dominant on his right foot. When you see the teams line up, he's not the biggest centre-back but he has a huge leap. Quietly people are realising we have an absolute gem in him."
