Southampton owner Dragan Solak admits Aaron Ramsdale will likely leave the South Coast club this summer, amid transfer interest from several Premier League sides.
Newcastle have long been linked with a move for the former Arsenal shot-stopper, with United head coach Eddie Howe working with Ramsdale at Bournemouth. He suffered his third Premier League relegation when the Saints dropped out of the top flight last season.
Still just 27, Ramsdale is said to be keen to stay in the Premier League, with Leeds United reportedly interested in a move.
Newcastle are thought to be keen to bring a new goalkeeper to St James' Park this summer, with Burnley shot-stopper James Trafford their No 1 target.
However, the newly-promoted Clarets have slapped a £40m price tag on the England star's head, which has so far proved too expensive for the Magpies.
Ramsdale would offer a much cheaper alternative, should United decide to bring a new keeper to Tyneside. He cost Southampton £25m last summer, and is likely to available for a similar price this year.
Solak told the Daily Echo: “We unfortunately are not sure that Ramsdale is going to stay, even though he loves the club.
"He’s a great young man, everybody loves him, but he wants to get his place in the national team and it’s not easy to get there in the Championship.
“He’s even personally looking at all the options of how he would go and come back if we are promoted because he loves the place and he loves the club.
"But generally we understand that he needs to stay within the Premier League level of football to achieve his goals and we will not stop that.”

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope ended the season strongly, with some suggesting United would be better off spending their transfer budget on other areas of the side.
Veteran Martin Dubravka signed a one-year contract extension earlier this year, while Odysseas Vlachodimos is expected to leave in the coming months.
Ramsdale made 30 Premier League appearances for Southampton last season but could only keep three clean sheets as they made a swift return to the Championship.
He played 89 times in three seasons with Arsenal, after making the switch from Sheffield United in 2021, where he won the Blades' player of the year award.
He has also been linked with moves to West Ham and Manchester United, although the Old Trafford club are closing in on a deal to sign Aston Villa's Emi Martinez.
