Mateo Joseph could be set to leave Leeds United this summer.

The 21-year-old featured 39 times in the Championship last season, notching three goals and three assists as the Whites secured promotion, but only started 11 matches.

However, there are doubts over how the Spain Under-21 star will adapt to the Premier League, and he is attracting significant interest in the transfer window.

Leeds star Joseph would ‘tick all the boxes’ for Birmingham

Birmingham are one of several clubs that want to sign the promising Elland Road forward, with Real Betis and Strasbourg also linked.

Former Aston Villa star Lee Hendrie believes that a move to St Andrew’s would be good for the Peacocks ace and Chris Davies’ side.

Speaking to Football League World (22 June), he said: “Mateo Joseph is linked with Birmingham City, Birmingham are linked with so many players.

“I do feel he has to have a real season away where he’s going to be one of the main players. If it is to be Birmingham, I think that’s where you’re going to see the best of him.

“Obviously, he’s been a bit-part player for quite some time now, but has been talked about quite heavily, bags of potential.

“If Birmingham are going to have potential of going again, they do have to start looking and thinking what potential do the likes of Joseph have? He certainly ticks the box for them.”

Joseph could hand Leeds a significant profit this summer

Daniel Farke‘s side requires attacking reinforcements as they return to the elite level, but Joseph may not be up to scratch.

His return in the second tier was not very encouraging and a new striker is expected to be on the cards, given concerns over Joel Piroe’s ability to step up, which could push Joseph even further down the pecking order.

If the Whites can secure a permanent deal for the young Spanish star with a decent sell-on fee, they should sanction an exit, as he is not going to make an impact in the top-flight immediately, based on the evidence from the last campaign.

Farke did not trust him to feature regularly in a lower-quality division, and when he did get the chance, he did not take it, so he is not going to pin his hopes of survival on the former Espanyol attacker.

The young Whites star admitted that he just wants to play often and continue his development, which he may struggle to do in LS11 if he remains in Yorkshire beyond this summer.

A departure makes sense for both parties, Joseph can get the playing time that he is so desperately looking for, and Farke and Co can use the money to help bring in a reliable goalscorer.
