Ex-Villa stalwart teases potential return with social media post

The 39-year-old joined us from Watford in 2007 and enjoyed a memorable four-year stint before departing for Manchester United, while he then returned for two more years in 2021 to take his tallies up to 247 appearances for the club with 38 goals and 53 assists to his name.

Young has remained highly thought of at Villa throughout by the club and supporters alike, and with his current contract at Everton set to expire at the end of this month, he faces a decision over his future.

As seen in the image below, he responded to a post from Villa marking the anniversary of his return to the club four years ago, and wrote: “Four years ago…maybe another one”.

Given the lack of reporting on such a scenario, it’s unclear at this stage as to whether or not this is Young just suggesting that he would love to return to Villa, or if there are actual talks ongoing between the two sides over a deal to bring him back.

Further, it also remains unclear as to what capacity he might return in, be it playing or coaching, or perhaps a combination of the two.

Villa could be looking at potential exits in the full-back positions this summer with speculation ongoing over the futures of Lucas Digne, Kosta Nedeljkovic and others, and so Young’s versatility to play in both roles could be useful for Unai Emery to have at his disposal as we continue to compete on multiple fronts.

That said, the Villa boss had the option of keeping Young previously and chose to move in a different direction with younger and more long-term options coming to the club, and so it would arguably seem like a strange U-turn two years on to want to bring him back to be a key member of the first-team squad.

In turn, a possible coaching position would make more sense, but that would depend on whether or not Young is ready to hang up his boots now, and if Villa have an opening available to allow him to gain experience while earning his coaching badges.

Time will tell if this was just Young leaving the door open for a return or genuine talks are being held, but he would certainly be a popular and useful figure to have around the club if he were to come back.
