Liverpool could have a big problem on their hands at the back over the next few seasons.
The Reds are synonymous with their attacking qualities as they strike fear into defences up and down the country, as well as the rest of Europe.
However, their defence is where the unsung heroes perhaps are and their backline has been nothing short of sensational over the last several years, ever since Virgil van Dijk stepped into the team really.
His centre-back partner has chopped and changed a little bit during that time, with Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate the main three that have enjoyed a spell alongside him.
But, this could be about to change again soon, with Liverpool very keen on Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi as they look for another young defender.
The Englishman has become a surprising target over the last few days and the story is gaining traction, especially after the 25-year-old has handed the Reds a key transfer boost.

Marc Guehi will not sign a new contract
Players leaving on a free is one of the worst possible scenarios, something Liverpool know all too well this summer after losing Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid.
This is something Palace now also have to worry about with Guehi as The Guardian have reported that the Englishman is prepared to see out his contract with the Eagles that expires next summer.

The possibility of leaving on a free will of course spike Liverpool’s interest, but they could land him as early as this summer if the south London club decide to cash in on him.

One potential stumbling block, however, is that Guehi would only move if he was guaranteed to be first-choice alongside van Dijk, something that may prove tricky given Konate’s role in the team.
The Frenchman’s future is also unclear as he is yet to sign a new deal despite it expiring next season also, with Real Madrid said to be keen to get him for free like they did with Alexander-Arnold.
Arne Slot certainly has a decision to make but if Konate remains hesitant on signing a new deal, perhaps a move for Guehi is a smart thing to do, whether that be this season or next summer for free.
Marc Guehi would be perfect for Liverpool
The Reds have needed a centre-back for quite some time but they have not made the mistake of rushing into a decision, with the club having a specific profile of who they want.
Liverpool want a slightly younger centre-back who complements van Dijk nicely and is also good with the ball at his feet, with Guehi ticking all the boxes.

Not only has he proven just how good he is, with former England manager Gareth Southgate labelling him as “exceptional,” but his personality is also something that would fit into the team as he is a very likeable character.
The 24-year-old has everything he needs to be successful at Anfield and he is only going to get better – especially if he’s next to van Dijk – suggesting Liverpool should go all-out to get him as he could be the future of the Reds’ backline.
