Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has reportedly vowed to fight for his place at Old Trafford as speculation mounts over his future. The Cameroon international’s place in Ruben Amorim’s squad appears under threat with the club linked with moves for Aston Villa stopper Emiliano Martinez and Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi.
The 29-year-old has made 101 club appearances since joining from Inter Milan two years ago. However, his form has fluctuated in England, and he was axed by Amorim in April after an error-strewn showing against Lyon in the Europa League. He duly regained his place from Altay Bayindir, but doubts over his reliability have remained.
According to the Guardian, Monaco are monitoring developments with a view to signing Onana. However, the Jong Ajax product is has made it clear to club bosses that he wants to fight for his place and isn’t seeking a move away.
However, the decision may be out of his hands if United pursue their interest in Martinez. The 32-year-old is contracted to Villa until 2029 but is reportedly interested in a move to the Red Devils despite their failure to secure European football next season.
Furthermore, Amorim has strongly hinted he’s assessing Onana’s position this summer. Pressed on whether he was targeting a new keeper this summer, he said: “We are going to make that evaluation for any position in the squad.
“We need to improve every position on the field. Goalkeeper is the same; we can work with Andre Onana. He’s already proved he is a top player with Inter. We have some seasons where we are all underperforming.”
Bayindir, 27, is also expected to leave in this window. He’s managed just 11 appearances in two seasons since moving from Fenerbahce, and shipped four goals against Tottenham in the League Cup defeat in December.
After being handed a rare chance to start a Premier League game in April, he suffered the same fate in a 4-1 loss to Newcastle. He’s now been linked with a return to Turkey with Goztepe favourites for his signature.
