Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola reiterated his team's desire to take the Club World Cup seriously during his press conference on Saturday evening.

Despite its many retractors, victory in the 32-team tournament would be hugely lucrative for City and would see them recoup the majority of their £110million summer transfer window spree.

So it was no surprise to see City name a strong line-up in their opening game of the competition on Wednesday and goals from Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku helped them seal a comfortable 2-0 win over Moroccan side Wydad AC in Philadelphia.

They now face UAE outfit Al-Ain in their second group match in Atlanta in the early hours of Monday morning and they head into that clash in a very strong position in Group G.

The FIFA Club World Cup will see 32 of the world's best club teams including Man City, Chelsea, Real Madrid, PSG and Bayern Munich play across 63 games from June 14-July 13.

Fans can watch every match live and for free by signing up to DAZN.

Juventus thrashed Al-Ain 5-0 in the other opening group match which means the Italian giants and City both sit in the qualifying positions on three points.

It means City could seal their place in the last 16 with victory over Al-Ain, but only on two conditions.

If Juventus also beat Wydad AC in the other Group G game on Sunday evening, that would move both City and Juve to six points and out of the reach of both Al-Ain and Wydad ahead of the final group game.

Should City win and Juventus and Wydad draw then they would also move through as neither Wydad or Al-Ain would be able to catch them on six points.

However, if City win and Wydad beat Juventus in the other group game then City would have to wait until the final group game to seal their qualification.

In that instance, City would be on six points and Juventus and Wydad would both be on three points. City face Juventus in their third group game and Wydad face Al-Ain and should they lose to Juve and Wydad win their final match then all three teams would end on six points and the top two teams on goal difference would advance to the knockout stages.

However, if City fail to win against Al-Ain then their fate will be decided on matchday three regardless.

The winner of Group G will face the runner-up of Group H in the last 16, while the runner-up of Group G will face the winner of Group H.

Group H contains Real Madrid, RB Salzburg, Al-Hilal and Pachuca. Salzburg beat Pachuca 2-1 in their opening match while Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Al-Hilal.
