Whether Liverpool will have a buy-back clause for Jarell Quansah as Fabrizio Romano delivers a 'here we go'

Having spent an unprecedented amount in the summer transfer window so far, Liverpool are in need of balancing the books.

The Reds have often been criticised by supporters for not spending enough to bolster the squad, but they cannot be accused of that in 2025.

After making Florian Wirtz the most expensive signing in Liverpool history, the Reds’ outlay is going to be massive this summer.

The Liverpool owners have tended to run the club on the basis of not spending more than they generate, and this has usually meant sales will follow a big signing. That will be no different this year, with a number of players likely to be sold.

One who has looked like being on the way out for the past several weeks is Jarell Quansah, who has been in talks over a transfer to Bayer Leverkusen.

And as Liverpool look to recoup some of the money they paid Leverkusen for Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, Quansah’s move is set to be completed. With the wheels firmly in motion, journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed whether Liverpool have included a buy-back clause into the deal.

Liverpool have Jarell Quansah buy-back

Quansah is highly-rated at Liverpool. He would never have made it into the first-team at all if that was not the case.

However, it is true that the 22-year-old has fallen down the pecking order under Arne Slot and that is why he is now being moved on.

Nevertheless, Quansah still has potential to develop into a top centre-back. And that’s why, according to Romano, Liverpool have inserted a buy-back clause into his transfer.

“Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, here we go!” the transfer expert reported on Sunday morning. “Deal agreed for £30m initial fee plus £5m add-ons.”

“Exclusive detail: Liverpool will have a buy back clause for Quansah to keep future control of the player. Contract until June 2030.”

How much is Liverpool’s buy-back clause?

Although Quansah is clearly a talented young defender, this deal makes sense in a lot of ways for Liverpool.

The England U21 international needs playing time to improve and he isn’t going to get it at Liverpool in the current conditions.

£35m is a good fee for the Reds, while they retain the chance to bring Quansah back if he reaches his potential at Leverkusen.

Given the slightly high price-tag, though, it is near certain that Liverpool will have to pay a real premium to get Quansah back at Anfield.

Leverkusen are wily operators in the market and would not have agreed to the clause unless it made sense for them. Although exact figures have not yet been released, and perhaps never will, it will cost Liverpool plenty to bring Quansah home in the future.
