Report: The latest indications from the Marc Guehi saga as Newcastle battle Liverpool

Newcastle United have been offered a further boost in their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Newcastle want to sign Guehi this summer, having failed to get a deal over the line last year.

Indeed, Guehi’s move to Newcastle collapsed in 2024 despite the club making a number of bids.

Now, rival interest has emerged. Liverpool are interested in Guehi, who has just a year to go on his contract at Palace.

Promisingly, however, a new update has emerged.

Newcastle United’s advantage in Marc Guehi transfer saga

Guehi’s agents aren’t ruling out a move to Newcastle despite the links with Liverpool.

A report from The Guardian has also offered Eddie Howe’s side a boost. They claim Guehi wants first-team football at his next club and that there are “indications” that those who can offer him that have a good chance of signing him.

While Guehi would no doubt back himself to get into the Liverpool side, there’s a huge amount of competition in the form of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

Newcastle, meanwhile, boast all of Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles in their squad. However, Botman and Lascelles have both struggled with serious injuries, while Schar and Burn are 33.

Guehi, at least on paper, is much more likely to get regular minutes on Tyneside.

What Marc Guehi has said about Newcastle United transfer

Guehi’s future at Palace was the subject of huge speculation last summer.

Palace chairman Steve Parish called the defender a “superstar” and said it would take huge money to sign him.

Typically understated, however, Guehi denied suggestions he was anything like a superstar despite some fine form at club level, as well as on the international stage.

Talking about his future at Selhurst Park during last summer’s saga, Guehi said to Sky Sports: “I’m not sure I’m a superstar but, you know, they are kind words from the chairman.”

He added: “I don’t like being the centre of attention at all.”
