Crystal Palace are considering a move to sign Southampton star Mateus Fernandes following the Saints’ relegation from the Premier League.
That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that Palace scouts have been tracking the 20-year-old’s progress.
Southampton value the midfielder at around £25million and are facing a difficult battle to keep hold of him amid growing interest from Premier League sides.
This comes after Football Insider exclusively revealed in May that Aston Villa, West Ham and Leeds want Fernandes and are preparing to make offers.
The Portugal Under-21 international was a shining light in a dismal season for the Saints and has now been backed to make an immediate return to the top flight.
Palace, meanwhile, are aiming to bolster their squad to participate in the Europa League after winning the FA Cup as Oliver Glasner expects to be backed heavily.

Brown told Football Insider in November that Palace plan to sign the best Championship stars and will once again look to the second tier for recruitment this summer.
The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted Palace scouts have been tracking Fernandes ahead of a potential move.
“*Matheus Fernandes is a target for a number of teams,*” he told Football Insider.
“One of those is Crystal Palace, who were keeping an eye on his performances this season.
“This is how Palace like to do their business, looking for talented players who haven’t quite got that star status and could come into their team and show what they can do.
“They assess the best talent from the relegated sides and Championship sides who they feel can push on a bit more in the right setting.
“Fernandes is one of those, he’s clearly a talented player and could be better in a better side.
“Palace scouts have been keeping an eye on him and they’ll know all about what he can do.
“The manager wants to strengthen his squad because they’re going to be playing in Europe and it’s important to have depth all over the pitch.
“So I’m expecting them to be busy, and Fernandes could be one they go for.”

Marc Guehi update emegres amid Liverpool reveal
While they continue to put plans in place to bolster Glasner’s squad this summer, Palace are also expecting to lose at least one key player.
Football Insider exclusively revealed on 20 June that Marc Guehi wants to join Liverpool ahead of the likes of Newcastle, Tottenham and Arsenal.
Sources say Guehi is holding out for a move to a Premier League and Champions League challenger, and Liverpool is believed to be of particular interest.
Meanwhile, Brown told Football Insider that Guehi is prepared to snub Arsenal if he is not given assurances over his playing time ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
