Liverpool went into the summer transfer window with several questions marks to be answered. With a host of deals already completed, there are still some uncertainty within the squad that will need to be addressed in the weeks and months ahead.

Three new signings have already been completed by Liverpool this summer, with Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and Armin Pecsi walking through the doors at Anfield. There is also scope for further fresh additions, in the coming days, with a £40million deal for Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez now close to completion.

One area that looks set to dominate speculation is centre-back. Liverpool have now agreed a £35million deal for Jarell Quansah to complete a permanent move to Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

As a result, Liverpool are expected to go into the market for his replacement, with Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi identified as a potential option.

The England international is out of contract at Selhurst Park next summer, but it remains to be seen if the Reds will actively pursue a deal in this window.

Quansah's departure would leave Liverpool with only three senior centre-backs in their squad. Virgil van Dijk is a mainstay in the starting XI, with Ibrahima Konate operating alongside him at the heart of the Reds defence more often than not.

Joe Gomez will be hoping to get more minutes with Liverpool next season, after enduring an injury-hit campaign that saw him make his final appearance back in February. Gomez will look to get more than the 17 appearances he managed last term, but the potential transfer business could put that into question.

If Liverpool were to sign Guehi as Quansah's replacement, the expectation would be that Palace's current captain would compete with Konate to partner Van Dijk at centre-back. That could potentially leave Gomez as the fourth-choice defender at Anfield next season.

There is also the uncertainty surrounding Konate's future at Liverpool. The France international is out of contract next summer and has been linked with a move to Real Madrid on a free transfer if an extension cannot be agreed.

This week saw Gomez mark the 10th anniversary of his arrival as a Liverpool player following his own move from Charlton Athletic in 2015.

With the potential for plenty of change at centre-back for the Reds, over these next 12 months, Gomez could be presented with a major decision on what to do next for his future.

Gomez himself is contracted at Anfield until the summer of 2027. If Liverpool were to go on and sign one or even two new central defenders this summer, then it would be understandable if Gomez was to give himself a decision to make, regardless of what may or may not happen with Konate's contract situation.
