Birmingham City 'leading race' to sign midfielder who cost £4m last summer

Birmingham City are reportedly 'leading the race' to complete the transfer of midfielder Tommy Doyle of Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer window.

Doyle cost Wolves a little over £4m when they signed him on a permanent basis from Manchester City last summer, following a successful loan spell; Doyle has made 58 appearances for Wanderers all told since joining initially in the summer of 2023, but he didn't play again for Vitor Pereira after mid-March last season.

It's been reported that Pereira will allow Doyle a move on a permanent basis this summer, with the midfielder not set to feature in the Portuguese's plans moving forwards - and that Blues are interested in completing a deal which would see him drop down a division and play at St Andrew's next season.

Doyle, who has previously had loan spells with Hamburg, Cardiff City and Sheffield United before joining Wolves, only featured seven times for City under Pep Guardiola and made a single substitute appearance in the Premier League. Now, his career beyond his years spent at the Etihad Stadium is set to come under the spotlight.

Blues, who have also been linked with Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien this weekend, leaned heavily on Paik Seung-ho and Tomoki Iwata to provide the axis in midfield as they marched to the League One table last year. Marc Leonard impressed when he featured but played second fiddle for the most part.

The likes of Luke Harris and Kieran Dowell have returned to their parent clubs, while Taylor Gardner-Hickman was also utilised in midfield last year when not operating at right-back but it's anticipated that Blues will be in the market for another midfielder in the summer transfer window.
