Liverpool appear to have been at the centre of the UK transfer market in recent weeks following their high profile additions such as Florian Wirtz for a price tag which is likely to eclipse the total spend of Leeds United this summer. It's not just the players being brought in but those who could head out that have dominated the conversation.
That is the case with Kostas Tsimikas linked with a move to Leeds to fill the left-back void which so badly needs filling. Now the latest player making waves coming out of Liverpool is defender and England international Joe Gomez.
The 28-year-old appears to be surplus to requirements at Anfield next season, with the club happy to let the player depart in order to assist them with the Profit and Sustainability Rules to allow the Premier League champions to keep on spending. Linked last summer with a switch to Newcastle United that looked like it was happening until the very last minute, Gomez is now being linked with a move to Elland Road.
Given the imminent announcement that Leeds have signed Jaka Bijol from Udinese, a link to Gomez seems a strange one, with the timing also strange. With interest from abroad as well as the Premier League, Liverpool will command a sizeable transfer fee for Gomez, who was set for a £45m move last summer to St James' Park. The price is likely to be almost halved now, but that still represents a significant outlay for a player who will expect a high wage, too.
Are Leeds planning on spending another £30m right now on another centre back to add to Bijol, Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk and Ethan Ampadu, when other areas need prioritising?
Talk of Leeds United joining Crystal Palace and West Ham in pursuing Gomez feels a stretch, at least at present, but it's certainly an acquisition which would strengthen Daniel Farke's squad no end. Able to play across all four positions in the defensive line, Gomez has big game experience as a full-back or a centre-back, with his best days still ahead of him.
Bringing in an England international, two-time Premier League winner and vastly-experienced physical presence would give Farke options, cover, and a tough decision over his best starting defensive set-up. But so would bringing in Marc Guehi who is tipped to head to Liverpool, and Leeds are certainly not signing him, so for now it all feels too much like agent talk to be taken seriously.
