Kevin Costner will always be known for his role as John Dutton in Yellowstone, but four years before he ever slipped on the boots in Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western series, he starred in a low-budget drama that just got a disappointing streaming update. Costner stars alongside Jennifer Garner and the late Chadwick Boseman in Draft Day, the 2014 sports movie following NFL manager Sonny Weaver (Costner) and his journey to build a team through the NFL draft. Draft Day has been streaming on Netflix for months now, but the streamer has announced that the last day to stream the film will be June 30. Draft Day grossed only $29 million at the box office against a $25 million budget, and the film netted scores of 60% from critics and 65% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
Scott Rothman and Rajiv Joseph wrote the screenplay for Draft Day, and Ivan Reitman directed the film. Rothman is known for his work on Army of One, the 2016 film starring Nicolas Cage, and Joseph is famous for his work on Welcome to Chippendales. Reitman sadly passed away in 2022 at the age of 75, and Draft Day ultimately marked the final directorial feature of his career. Three years before he teamed up with Costner for the football drama, Reitman also directed No Strings Attached, the legendary R-rated rom-com starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher. He also directed Uma Thurman and Luke Wilson in My Super Ex-Girlfriend. However, Reitman is most famous for his work helming the original Ghostbusters movie in 1984, and the 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters II.
What’s Going on With Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’?
Kevin Costner debuted the first part of Horizon: An American Saga in theaters last year, but things didn’t go according to plan. Costner left the final season of Yellowstone to work on the film, which he has openly called his passion project, but it failed to generate even $50 million at the box office on a $100 million budget. Costner had already filmed the sequel, which was pulled from the release schedule and is still hanging in limbo. Netflix has also announced that Horizon: An American Saga: Chapter 1 will leave the streamer next month.
Be sure to watch Draft Day on Netflix before it leaves on June 30, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates and coverage of Costner’s future projects.
