Jeremie Frimpong tells Liverpool exactly what to expect from Florian Wirtz

Jeremie Frimpong has backed Florian Wirtz to shine at Liverpool despite the pressure that inevitably will come with his record-breaking transfer fee.

The German completed his £100M ($135M) move to Anfield on Friday, which is the highest transfer figure ever paid by the Reds, while a further £16M ($22M) in additional add-ons could make Wirtz’s arrival the most expensive transfer in Premier League history.

Given FSG ’s usually tight-fisted approach, committing to such a lavish transfer fee underlines Liverpool's internal belief that it has signed one of the most talented young players on the planet.

That’s a view shared by Frimpong, who knows Wirtz well from their time together at Bayer Leverkusen. The pair have both swapped the BayArena for Anfield this summer, as Arne Slot shapes this Liverpool side in his image.

Both will bring more dynamism and explosiveness, as will Milos Kerkez, who is expected to be Liverpool’s next signing.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Frimpong said he expects his current - and former - teammate to light up the Premier League next season.

“That is my boy. Just expect a winner,” the Dutch international said. “He is a very, very, very, special player. And for me, he's a very hard-working guy.

“The league will love him. And I ain't got to talk too much. Just watch.

“Flo, he doesn’t crumble under pressure; he's a guy that likes pressure,” Frimpong continued. “I feel like when you're on the pitch you forget about everything, you just enjoy football, you just play.

“Flo is one of the guys that makes you enjoy football, just seeing how he plays. He's going to be perfect and he's playing with Liverpool players, so he's going to be perfect. He’s going to fine.”

Asked for his own ambitions after agreeing a £30million ($40M) switch to Liverpool, the right-back replied: “For me, I play for trophies; I want to win trophies.

“Obviously, I don't want to talk too much and say ‘yeah, we're going to win that’. But I want to win; that's why I play football.”

Frimpong and Wirtz developed a close bond at Leverkusen, with the German club posting four images of the pair on X after the transfers were confirmed, accompanied with the caption: “Inseparable. Make sure they keep laughing together.”

The duo played an integral part in the 2023/24 league and cup-winning side, which made it to the Europa League final. Leverkusen also went an entire Bundesliga campaign unbeaten under Xabi Alonso.
