Man Utd icon Peter Schmeichel snubbed Buffon & Casillas when naming the best goalkeeper ever

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel could make a strong case for himself to be considered the greatest goalkeeper ever. The shot-stopper, who spent eight years at Old Trafford, proved he is convinced that isn't the case recently.

Despite lifting the Premier League five times and being regarded as perhaps the best in the division's history, the Great Dane has instead labelled another iconic figure as 'the best goalkeeper there's ever been'. He also gave his thoughts when asked to pick between other top-class 'keepers.

Schmeichel Rates Manuel Neuer Over Buffon and Casillas

'He brought something different'

A modern-day great dominated the proceedings early on as Schmeichel opted for Liverpool number one Alisson ahead of the likes of Jens Lehmann and Man City's Ederson. One of the best goalkeepers the Premier League has ever seen while still active, the Brazilian was finally beaten by another English top-flight GOAT in Petr Cech.

The man with the most clean sheets in Premier League history didn't last long as English legend David Seaman took over as Schmeichel expressed his 'love' for the ex-Arsenal star. He said: "David is my generation. We've had some incredible battles, and I love him so much. So sorry, Petr."

He then quickly turned his attention to another Man United icon in the form of Dutch giant Edwin van der Sar. Schmeichel remained loyal to the retired Netherlands international ahead of the likes of David De Gea, Gianluigi Buffon and Iker Casillas.

He did finally opt for one glovesman ahead of Van der Sar after refusing to include himself in the conversation. That man was World Cup-winning hero Manuel Neuer. The German revolutionised the way goalkeepers play out from the back, and Schmeichel acknowledged that in his glowing praise of the Bayern Munich superstar, saying:

"I think Neuer is the best there's ever been. He brought something different and new to the game. So I've got to go with him."
