How Newcastle United's William Osula played as Denmark dream ruined in chaotic fashion

The dream is over for Newcastle United’s William Osula after Denmark were knocked out of the U21 European Championships on Sunday night.

Osula has been exciting Newcastle United fans with his performances for his country during this summer’s tournament.

The 21-year-old scored three goals and registered two assists in Denmark’s run to the quarter-finals, though that is now over.

Indeed, Newcastle fans have been denied a potential clash between Tino Livramento and Osula in the tournament after the latter’s side were knocked out on Sunday in chaotic fashion.

The Danes were 2-1 up against France heading into the final ten minutes of their quarter-final but threw away the lead and slumped to a 3-2 defeat.

Here’s how Osula fared.

It wasn’t a great day for Osula.

Per Fot Mob data, the forward did not have a single shot in his 60 minutes on the pitch.

Granted, he only had 17 touches, so was hardly given a huge amount of service. In fact, only one of them came in France’s penalty box.

William Osula has given Eddie Howe a major dilemma

While Alexander Isak is the undisputed No.1 striker for Newcastle United, there’s a space open behind the Sweden star in the pecking order.

Newcastle want to sign a new forward but Osula’s performances, France game aside, must have given Eddie Howe something to think about.

Newcastle are in talks with Callum Wilson over a new contract but little about what he did last season would suggest he should be starting ahead of Osula.

With that in mind, perhaps the former Sheffield United forward really can be Isak’s back-up next season.

Hopefully, he can shake off the disappointment from the France game and return for pre-season a better player.
