Wembanyama's Spurs Move From Target To Enemy In Monster KD Trade

Give the San Antonio Spurs a quick way to get great again and quickly ... and they'll take it.

Unfortunately, though, their Texas neighbors had the same idea.

Kevin Durant and the Phoenix Suns have been involved in trade talks all offseason; a move was inevitable. So one of this era's greatest talents - even as he is age 36 - became available.

A few days ago, three teams have emerged as KD's preferred landing spots, a list that included the Spurs.

Also noted in a leak according to ESPN's Shams Charania? The Miami Heat and Houston Rockets with the idea that Durant would commit to a new long-term contract with those clubs — something he might not do otherwise.

It sounds like the Heat came close. It does not sound like the Spurs did.

And as of Sunday morning? KD is moving to Houston.

The deal?

Houston Rockets receive: Kevin Durant

Phoenix Suns receive: Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in this year's draft, and five second-round picks

Durant has only one year remaining on his current deal and could elect free agency next summer if he would've been sent to a team that he doesn't wish to stay with.

So it would seem he will get locked in with Houston ... and now the Spurs, who were positioned to make a blockbuster move to help young superstar Victor Wembanyama, will instead prepare to Wemby to match up opposite KD.

San Antonio has piled up assets and supporting cast members for the Frenchman. De'Aaron Fox is an All-Star. The NBA Rookie of the Year is Stephon Castle. The Spurs own the No. 2 pick in the upcoming NBA draft — and could in theory use that pick in some sort of trade.

But for now?

Durant, who is playing on that aforementioned expiring $54.7 million deal for the 2025-26 season, is eligible to sign a new a two-year contract extension on July 6 worth as much as $122 million.

And KD - who made his 15th All-Star team this season and averaged 26.6 points, six rebounds and 4.2 assists in 62 games as a sure-fire future Hall of Famer - is now going to get that sort of deal in Houston.

And Houston is now considered by oddsmakers to be the second-best team in the 2025-26 NBA race, behind only OKC.
