Report: Spurs hire Mavs assistant Sean Sweeney as associate head coach

It may not be Kevin Durant, but the Suns and Rockets aren’t the only team to make a move on the last day of the 2024-25 season. In the shadow of that big announcement, Shams Charania also reported that the Spurs are set to hire Dallas Mavericks’ assistant Sean Sweeney as associate head coach and Mitch Johnson’s right hand man.

Dallas Mavericks assistant Sean Sweeney has agreed on a deal to become the associate head coach of the San Antonio Spurs under Mitch Johnson, Andy Miller of Klutch Sports tells ESPN. Sweeney’s departure from Dallas comes as he has sought an elevated role in recent years, including recently interviewing for the Suns’ head coaching position. Per ESPN:

Sweeney was brought over to Dallas along with head coach Jason Kidd in 2021 after previously working with Kidd in Milwaukee and Brooklyn. Sweeney’s NBA career began with the Nets, where he started as a video coordinator before being named an assistant coach ahead of the 2013-14 season.

According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, he will be considered a great loss for the Mavs organization since he has been Kidd’s right hand man and was their offensive and defensive coordinator. He was also considered Giannis Antetokounmpo’s preferred workout partner and played an integral role in his development during his time in Milwaukee, so I’m sure it’s no coincidence that the Spurs desire his services with Victor Wembanyama on board, especially since that’s the same role Johnson played with him.

Welcome to San Antonio, Sean!
