The journey from small-town Nebraska to NFL stardom has come full circle for Philadelphia Eagles center Cam Jurgens. Eight years after playing his final game for the Beatrice High School Orangemen, the school has honored their hometown hero by naming their football field after him.
Cam Jurgens Field now bears the name of one of Beatrice's most accomplished athletic alumni, a fitting tribute to a player who dominated multiple sports during his high school career. Jurgens was a three-time All-State selection for the Orangemen, terrorizing opposing offenses as a linebacker while also serving as a reliable target at tight end. His athletic prowess extended well beyond the gridiron, as he also competed in track and field and basketball.
The ceremony brought out Jurgens' humor as he reflected on his time at Beatrice. "I've hurt myself a lot on this field... I've puked all over the place... now my name is going down too," he joked, referencing both the physical toll of high school football and a particularly memorable incident involving a broken ankle. The casual nature of his remarks belied the significance of the moment, as Jurgens admitted he never imagined having a football field named after him.
Staying true to his roots, Jurgens continued his football journey at the University of Nebraska, where he underwent a significant positional transformation from two-way high school star to offensive lineman. His adaptability paid dividends as he became a three-year starter for the Cornhuskers, earning Third Team All-Big Ten honors during his senior season while also competing in shot put for the track and field team.
The Philadelphia Eagles recognized Jurgens' potential when they selected him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. After spending his early NFL seasons learning behind All-Pro center Jason Kelce, Jurgens seized his opportunity when the veteran retired. His first season as a full-time starter earned him his first Pro Bowl selection while anchoring an offensive line that helped Philadelphia capture Super Bowl LIX over the Kansas City Chiefs. The Eagles' confidence in their young center was demonstrated when they signed him to a four-year, $68 million contract extension.
