Florian Wirtz says he can't wait to get started at Liverpool with Jeremie Frimpong after both moved from Bayer Leverkusen this summer. Frimpong officially became a Reds player at the beginning of the month after his £29m release clause was triggered in May.

The Netherlands international will add an injection of pace and versatility to the Premier League champions' squad next season, particularly on the right side.

Wirtz, meanwhile, joined officially on Friday after a club-record deal worth £116m was struck with Leverkusen after a few weeks of intense negotiations involving sporting director Richard Hughes and his counterpart Simon Rolfes.

The Reds new boys are close away from the pitch and were pictured on holiday together last week, prior to Wirtz and his family touching down for the attacking midfielder's Merseyside medical.

And the Germany international has revealed how he is looking forward to beginning a new chapter alongside the versatile Dutchman at Anfield.

"I played, I think, three or four years with him," Wirtz told Liverpoolfc.com. "He's a really good player, a really good person, a really funny guy. Good for every changing room and also on the pitch, big qualities to attack and to defend.

"He was then the first one who signed with Liverpool and of course he wanted me to join as well. But I think I made my decision by my own, but it was maybe a small part that convinced me in the end as well.

"Yeah, for sure [it's exciting]. I think it's a really nice thing that we can play together again at a new club, at maybe a bigger club, and make the move together. I'm really looking forward to standing on the pitch with him again.

"He was my neighbour in the changing room, he sat directly next to me and I had to speak English with him. After I finished my school, I didn't speak really good English but he was teaching me a lot and making me speak in more English and better English."

Wirtz added: "I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.

"I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best. I spoke also with some players who played there and they told me that it's perfect for me and every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game. I'm really looking forward to playing my first game."

Both Wirtz and Frimpong will be part of pre-season training on July 7 and are expected to make their unofficial debuts six days later in a friendly with Preston North End.
