It’s been a minute since we’ve had such a clear cut bestie bro relationship in the team. Mohamed Salah and Dejan Lovren, Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana. Even Andy Robertson’s relationship with the other side of the pitch seemed to sour at the end.
Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz have a well documented friendship from their time at Bayer Leverkusen, and that relationship will be carried on to Merseyside now that it’s official that Wirtz is following in Frimpong’s footsteps by joining Liverpool.
Sky Sports recently spoke to the new right back for the Reds and started off by asking what fans can expect of the creative German in the squad.
“Just expect a winner. He’s a very, very, very special player and for me, he’s a very hard-working guy. The league will love him – I haven’t got to talk too much, just watch him!” Frimpong said, clearly excited.
“Flo, he doesn’t crumble under pressure – he likes pressure. He’s a guy that likes pressure. I feel like when you’re on the pitch you forget about everything, you just enjoy football, you just play and Flo is one of the guys who makes you enjoy football, just seeing how he plays.
“He’s going to be perfect and he’s playing with Liverpool players [too] – so he’s going to be perfect. He’s going to be fine.”
Knowing that the Premier League is one of the most competitive and high pressure leagues in the world, it is a comfort to also hear that Wirtz absorbs pressure. This can only be a good thing, after Liverpool have shattered both club and country records with the signing fee that was agreed to. Though it will take some tactical changes, the arrivals of both Frimpong and Wirtz couldn’t have come at a better time for Liverpool as they look to build on last year’s championship win.
Frimpong, of course, is focused on the silverware.
“For me, I play for trophies so I want to win trophies. Obviously I don’t want to talk too much and say, ‘We’re going to win that, that and that,’ but I want to win. That’s why I play football.”
It goes without saying that Liverpool sounds like the perfect place for a player that wants to win trophies. We have so many, after all.
