Development squad to face Bashley in pre-season for former Cherry Chiedozie

Chiedozie suffered life-changing injuries when he was hit by a car when on the hard shoulder of the M27 in February.

He was on his way back from a Bashley game against Tavistock when he picked up a puncture and stopped before he was hit.

Having progressed through the academy ranks at Bournemouth, he spent seven years at the club and served his apprenticeship there.

The 30-year-old also played in the high-profile pre-season game against Real Madrid at Dean Court in 2013.

The non-league community rallied around Chiedozie and the club, contributing in numbers to the fundraiser as he continues his recovery.

Collections were held by Mousehole, Bishops Cleeve, Tavistock, Bideford, Westbury, Shaftesbury, AFC Totton, Sholing, Poole Town and Wimborne Town.

Alan Connell’s development squad will begin their pre-season at Bashley’s Veho Community Stadium on Friday, July 11, kicking off at 7.30pm.

Afterwards, Connell’s team will face Crystal Palace at their academy training ground in Beckenham on Tuesday, July 15 at 2pm.

Up next is a home game against the National League’s Eastleigh at the Vitality Stadium training pitches on Saturday, July 19 at 1pm.

Connell’s development squad had a successful campaign in 2024/25, reaching the final of the Professional Development League playoffs.

They reached that stage having beaten Burnley 4-3 in the semifinals, that victory being the 14th win in a row.

That remarkable run saw the Cherries soar up the table, eventually seeing them finish atop the south group.

The first team’s pre-season schedule begins on July 15 against Hibernian, before a game against Bristol City and a trip to the US to face Everton, Manchester United and West Ham.

They complete their pre-season against Real Sociedad on August 9 before they kick off their Premier League campaign against defending champions Liverpool on Friday, August 15.
