A transfer domino effect could see Newcastle United miss out on two targets.
Jarell Quansah is admired by Newcastle and was last year part of conversations that almost saw Anthony Gordon move to Anfield.
The Magpies were under pressure to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and at one stage held talks with Liverpool regarding a player-swap deal involving Gordon.
Liverpool made it clear they wanted to keep Quansah and instead offered Joe Gomez. However, a potential deal was pulled when United sold Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to Brighton & Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest, respectively.
Quansah signed a new five-year contract with the Reds in October but eight months later is on the move.
Jarell Quansah set to join Bayer Leverkusen
Arne Slot’s side have signed both Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen this summer for a combined £146million. Now Quansah is heading in the other direction.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano wrote on X: “Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, here we go! Deal agreed for £30m initial fee plus £5m add-ons. 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥: Liverpool will have a 𝐛𝐮𝐲 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 for Quansah to keep future control of the player. Contract until June 2030.”
The fee will be a club record for Leverkusen, with Quanseh replacing Jonathan Tah who has joined Bayern Munich on a free transfer.
Quansah finished the 2023-24 season as a regular under Jurgen Klopp but couldn’t establish himself under Slot. The 22-year-old started the opening match of last season away to Ipswich Town but was hauled off at half-time for Ibrahima Konate.
He featured twice against Newcastle last season, though was out of position at right-back. The two sides drew 3-3 at St James’ Park in the Premier League before Eddie Howe’s side won 2-1 at Wembley to lift the Carabao Cup.
Liverpool target Newcastle United transfer target Marc Guehi
Once Quansah’s move to Germany is confirmed, The Telegraph claims Liverpool are expected to make a “significant” offer for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.
Newcastle tried to sign the Palace defender last summer after he was identified as Eddie Howe’s top centre-back target. However, they were ultimately left frustrated as the Eagles remained firm on their £70m asking price.

Guehi is now into the final year of his contract and, as it stands, won’t be extending his stay at Selhurst Park. As per the Daily Telegraph, Palace will cash in on the 24-year-old and are confident he will fetch a major fee.
The 24-year-old remains a top target for the Magpies but Liverpool are emerging as favourites.
Palace are already planning for life without Guehi, with talks are underway with Sporting Lisbon for Ousmane Diomande.
Diomande moved to Portugal from FC Midtjylland in 2023 and is now viewed as one of Europe’s most highly-rated defenders having been tracked by multiple European clubs. But contrary to reports, NewcastleWorld understands Newcastle are not interested in the Ivorian.
BBC Sport reports that Diomande is valued at around £40m, a fee that would smash Palace’s current transfer record of £32m paid to Liverpool for Christian Benteke nine years ago.
