Aston Villa face fresh competition in winger pursuit

The 19-year-old star has emerged as one of the top winger targets for Unai Emery this summer but Villa are not the only club pursuing his signature.

Reports in Spain claim Como, managed by former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas, are also in the race for Rodriguez, who has a release clause of around £30million in his contract.

Villa are yet to have an agreement with either Betis or the player, who came off the bench late in Spain under-21s defeat to England at the European under-21 Championships on Saturday night.

Rodriguez enjoyed a breakthrough season for his club, scoring three goals in 32 appearances in all competitions. He was a second half substitute in Betis’ 4-1 Conference League final defeat to Chelsea last month.

Villa are expected to meet with the player and his representatives to outline their plans in the coming days.

Emery is in the market for a winger with Leon Bailey among those players who could leave Villa this summer. The Jamaica international’s future should become clearer after he has finished playing at the Gold Cup.

Villa also want to recruit a right-sided centre-back and a right-back after the conclusion of Axel Disasi’s loan spell from Chelsea.
