Amid growing speculation about Nico Williams’ future and mounting fan unrest, Athletic Club has issued a strong statement defending both the player and the club’s values.
The message comes shortly after a disturbing act of vandalism in Barakaldo, where a mural of Nico and his brother Inaki Williams was defaced, replacing Nico’s face with a message that read: “Go or stay, you have lost respect.”
Nico has recently been linked with a summer move to Barcelona, sparking mixed emotions among Athletic supporters.
But the club has now broken its silence in a firm, clear tone, reminding everyone what it truly means to be part of Athletic.
Disrespecting one of ours is disrespecting Athletic
In an official statement, Athletic Club expressed deep regret over the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to the values that define the Basque institution.
“The Club understands that the current situation may cause some concern among Athletic fans, especially when fueled by rumours, arrogance, or disdain for our identity,” the statement read.

That is why those who have erased Nico's image from artist Carlos López's mural do not represent Athletic.

Referencing the vandalised mural, the club strongly condemned the act. “Disrespecting one of our own is disrespecting Athletic Club itself. Those who erased his image do not represent this Club.”
The mural originally featured both Williams brothers, who are symbols of pride for both the city and Athletic Club. The club has since contacted artist Carlos Lopez and offered full support to restore the mural to its original form as quickly as possible.
Calls for respect
With tensions rising over Nico’s possible departure, the club has urged fans to uphold the values that make Athletic unique.
“Being an Athletic fan also means knowing how to maintain composure. Defending Athletic means acting with respect, not falling for provocations or losing your manners.”
Athletic Club’s message is clear that no matter what happens with Nico’s future, personal attacks and public disrespect have no place within the club.
