Liverpool centre-back Jarell Quansah has agreed a deal to join Bayer Leverkusen this summer, according to a new update from reliable journalist Paul Gorst.
The 22-year-old struggled to make an impact for the Reds in 2024/25, no doubt being delighted to win the Premier League title but also frustrated at his lack of action.
While there may still have been a temptation for Quansah to remain at Liverpool and continue learning from Virgil van Dijk, hopefully maturing into a key starter over time, it looks as though his Anfield adventure is over.
According to the Liverpool Echo‘s Gorst on X, the Englishman is too Bayer Leverkusen in a £35m deal, with the Reds agreeing a deal with the Bundesliga giants:
“Jarell Quansah set to join Bayer Leverkusen as #LFC agree a deal worth up to £35m. Eventual terms could contain buy-back clause. Priority now a younger centre-back to replace 22-year-old but Marc Guehi, 25 next month, may be pursued at a cut-price fee.”
The right time for Liverpool to cash in on Quansah?
This is a huge decision by Liverpool, considering Quansah is such an impressive young centre-back, being lauded by Virgil van Dijk in the past:
“He’s been important. Every challenge that was thrown his way he dealt with. He was outstanding again. The sky is the limit. He just needs to stay humble and keep working hard and keep improving.”
That said, it is so rare that young academy talents go on to fully make the grade at Liverpool, with the likes of Steven Gerrard and Trent Alexander-Arnold such rare examples in the past 30 years, so the club may have made the right decision to cash in on Quansah now.
He can go on to have an excellent career, hopefully thriving at Bayer Leverkusen and being a fixture in England’s squad for years to come.
For Liverpool, it’s now a case of finding an upgrade on Quansah, with Crystal Palace ace Marc Guehi strongly linked with a move to Anfield this summer.
The 24-year-old could be an ideal addition, strengthening the squad depth significantly and coming in as a proven Premier League player.
