'It is what it is' - Jose Sa speaks for first time since doubts over Wolves future

Jose Sa has reflected on a mixed season at Wolves, following talk of a possible Molineux exit.

Wolves endured a very up-and-down campaign in 24/25, something which was reflected in the form of Sa in between the sticks.

Several shaky moments from the Portuguese saw Sa earn heavy criticism from Jamie Carragher and other pundits.

The 32-year-old’s inconsistent form would even see him be dropped for Sam Johnstone at points during the season.

Sa’s performances would recover during the back end of the campaign, but that hasn’t stopped rumours of Vitor Pereira looking for a new goalkeeper.

Jose Sa speaks on difficult Wolves campaign

Since taking over the gloves from Rui Patricio in 2021, Sa hasn’t really been challenged as Wolves’ number one.

Last season, though, would see the Portuguese have to fight for his place, with number two Johnstone being introduced into the starting line-up.

Johnstone’s lacklustre displays would ultimately see Sa return to the side, and the 32-year-old has since revealed how he felt about the challenge.

“This is football. We had to keep going and keep working. In the end, it is what it is,” Sa told the Wolves website.

“Of course, I believed [in himself]. I always believe. I always work to come back to the top level and thankfully I did it. But I just worked hard and, in the end, it is what it is.”

Wolves goalkeeper coach could be key in deciding Sa future

Pereira’s arrival at Wolves also brought about a change in the goalkeeping department, with previous keeper coach Neil Cutler departing the club in January 2025.

So when it comes to deciding whether Sa will still be at Molineux next season, Wolves’ new goalkeeping coach could play a big part.

When speaking on staff change, Sa claimed:

“When it comes to the goalkeeper coach, I try to always take the best of everyone. I would never say that this person is better than another one, because what one goalkeeper coach has, maybe the others don’t have.

“We have to take everything that they have, the best of what they have, and keep growing up and try to be better. I’ve tried to do this every year in my career.”
