Newcastle United’s long-running pursuit of Marc Guehi appears unlikely to yield a summer transfer, with the defender now expected to remain at Crystal Palace for at least one more season.
According to Daily Mail’s Robert Summerscales, “Guehi is said to be willing to bide his time at Crystal Palace despite widespread interest in his signature from elsewhere.”
The 24-year-old has two years remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park, with no indication of an imminent extension or move.
Newcastle submitted a bid of around £50 million last summer, which was turned down by Palace. Tottenham also made an unsuccessful approach in January, while Liverpool joined the list of interested clubs at the start of June. Despite this, Guehi is reportedly happy to stay at the club that made him captain and with whom he lifted the FA Cup last season.
“Guehi — who has been capped 23 times by England and is expected to play a crucial role at next year’s World Cup — featured in 35 of Palace’s 38 Premier League matches last season,” Summerscales reported.
The situation puts Crystal Palace in a difficult position, even if they want to cash in on Guehi now. If the defender refuses to accept a move elsewhere and sees out his deal through 2026 without agreeing to a new contract, the club risks losing one of their top assets on a free transfer.
Newcastle’s shortlist of defensive reinforcements remains open and features many other options, but with Guehi unlikely to move this summer, it’s more than probable that the Magpies need to shift their focus elsewhere in the market.
