Four senior Everton players have now entered the final week of their contracts with their future, publicly at least, unresolved. Seamus Coleman, Idrissa Gueye, Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are on deals that will expire on June 30 unless new terms are agreed.

A further three first team players will enter the final 12 months of their contracts in July. Consideration over their positions is another job on the lengthy ‘to do’ list during a summer of immense transition at the club.

The immediate priority is reaching clarity on those players who are just days away from the expiration of their contracts. Coleman and Gueye have been offered the chance to extend their stays at the club. David Moyes is eager to retain club captain Coleman on a playing contract despite his injury struggles over recent years - though he was open to him moving into the backroom setup should the Republic of Ireland international prefer.

The manager is keen to retain the 36-year-old’s dressing room influence, however, as the squad is overhauled and the club moves to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Gueye was awarded the player of the year title by supporters and his teammates and deliberations with the 35-year-old are understood to have centred on the length of any future deal.

The situations around Keane and Calvert-Lewin are less clear, with Everton having maintained contact with the players through the close season.

Any uncertainty around the direction of travel over those players has not prevented the club from preparing for a busy summer, with Carlos Alcaraz having already been signed and talks advancing with right back Kenny Tete as he approaches the final days of his Fulham contract. The club has also opened talks with Jarrad Branthwaite over a new contract that better reflects his importance.

Once the club enters July, James Tarkowski, James Garner and Vitalii Mykolenko - who were all part of Moyes’ first team plans last season - will be in the last 12 months of their deals, meaning thought will need to be given to where they fit into Everton’s longer term future.
