Liverpool are busy reinforcing their Premier League title-winning squad from a position of strength and, in the event of the departure of young defender Jarell Quansah, could now opt to replace him with Crystal Palace's coveted Marc Guehi - and some fans in the Liverpool ECHO comments section say he could be a future leader of the side in the vein of Virgil van Dijk.

Quansah's impending £35million transfer to Bayer Leverkusen leaves Arne Slot with a centre-back trio of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez. Gomez is wanted by a number of Premier League clubs and may get a move this summer but, even if he stayed put, Liverpool face a busy season, and something like a injury or a suspension at a critical time could threaten to derail it.

Crystal Palace's FA Cup-winning captain and England international Guehi could be on the move this summer - due to the short time left on his contract. Palace are after a first-choice defender already this summer, so Guehi's time in London could be numbered, and Liverpool could take advantage of the situation and secure a top, home-grown centre-back for a knock-down fee.

He's also admired at Newcastle United, who spent much of last summer trying to tempt him away from Palace, ending with a failed bid in the region of £65million. Liverpool would not be expecting to pay that much, and the London club would be mindful of losing him for nothing at all, at a time when they're trying to climb into the top half of the league table.

A transfer move for Guehi could be a real win for Liverpool, according to some fans. Reader Jimmys1casey says: "Defence is average without VvD. We need natural leaders in the squad. Guehi is a leader."

Commenter Samsongforyou writes: "I wouldn't see Guehi as a replacement for Quansah, but rather Konate. We need a new senior CB and young CB. I hope we have something lined up, because I don't want a repeat of 20/21."

ChangeName says: "Guehi is better than Konate, and it sounds like Konate wants to leave anyway."

Jamesie1 is sold on the home-grown point: "Guehi is a great player - and he's English. We could end up with a LFC all stars non-British team."

Joby writes: "Bring in Marc Guehi with the Quansah money, then tell Konate to sign a contract extension or he is being sold in this window, and the job's a good'un."

A transfer for Guehi may mean trouble for Konate, though, says Klopp's Disciple: "Konate is strong and tall but he hasn't got VvD's leadership qualities and can be quite rash at times. If Guehi gets into the team it might be hard for Konate to shift him."

Others aren't decided, with Frimpong-1 writing: "If Konate leaves then I agree with him coming in, but if not then I don't want him. I don't want to see Ibou or Marc on the bench as they're both to good to be benched, and I love Ibou so I'm not sure. I would rather bring in Jorrel Hato as he would make more sense to be a benched player with quality."

Silversong sees a different problem: "Guehi is a left-sided CB and that's where he wants to play... VvD is already there, and he ain't sitting on the bench - you know, he's the club captain!"

Penne says: "Is Guehi really better than Konate? Personally, I would say no."

Scousenumberone agrees: "Everytime I've seen Marc Guehi play for England, he makes a serious mistake, [Dejan] Lovren style, every game. He does have good recovery pace, but surely there's better out there?"
