Newcastle United are set to sign Spanish wonderkid Antonio Cordero on July 1.
Newcastle United reportedly offered a more lucrative package than Real Madrid or Barcelona for Spanish wonderkid Antonio Cordero.
An announcement last month confirmed the 18-year-old will head to St James’ Park when his Malaga contract expires on July 1. Newcastle fought off stiff opposition to sign Cordero as the Saudi-backed project continues to invest in youth.
Developing young talent - whether for the first team or to be sold on at a profit - has become a key trading method among Premier League clubs. The likes of Chelsea and Manchester City have efficiently flipped youngsters in recent years to allow them to bankroll big-money signings.
But as a Spain under-19 international, Newcastle will be hoping Cordero can become a breakout star in Eddie Howe’s first team. He arrived having enjoyed a breakout campaign in the Segunda Division, with 12 goal contributions.
Spanish media left furious
Malaga fans and media were left furious at Cordero’s decision to jump ship. Local outlet Diario Sur called the prospect a “snake” for choosing the Magpies - pointing towards money being the motivating factor.
The Athletic report that finances were a key driver behind Cordero heading to St James’ Park. However, a clearer pathway to regular football was also crucial in his decision.
Paul Mitchell on Antonio Cordero future
Real Madrid and Barcelona favoured letting Cordero develop in their youth teams while Newcastle want him to go on loan. It is unclear whether a proposed move would be to another British club or if he will move overseas.
Outgoing sporting director Paul Mitchell confirmed Cordero is set to head elsewhere on the day he arrived. He told the club website: "Antonio is an exciting talent. We're delighted to bring him to Newcastle United amidst interest in Spain and across Europe.
"He has lots of potential. The next phase of his development will be for the club to select a loan move that will challenge him and build on his experiences."
