Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal transfer back on after player revolt and Sporting CP anger

It has already been one of the sagas of the summer and we're not out of June yet.

It was always going to be the case though, with Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal talk going all the way back to last summer.

Arsenal need to sign a striker and have set their stall out to complete a deal this summer having failed to add a frontman to their ranks in either the last summer transfer window or the January transfer window.

It may well have cost them in the Premier League title race, finishing as runners-up for the third season in a row, and in the Champions League too, where they were dumped out at the semi-final stage by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.

Gyokeres has been heavily linked with a move to north London, with speculation rife that it would be either the Swede or Benjamin Sesko that would arrive at the Emirates Stadium this summer as the big-money signing.

While Arsenal may wait until July, for financial purposes, to get any business done, it has been a whirlwind month of the transfer window so far when it comes to reporting on the Gyokeres to Arsenal situation.

Here football.london takes a look at just what has happened...

Early interest

No sooner had the Premier League season ended than supporters were already clamouring for transfer news and it was imperative that Arsenal signed a striker in this transfer window.

Gyokeres' name was on everyone's lips almost immediately, with the Swede once again plundering a plethora of goals in the Portuguese league with Sporting CP.

The now 27-year-old notched 54 goals this season making him the hottest marksman in Europe and on the list of plenty of teams who need to sign a forward.

Asking price drops

Gyokeres has an £85million release clause in his Sporting CP contract, which was enough to make Arsenal walk away from a potential deal last summer.

However, it was widely reported that that release clause would not be in place this summer and that Sporting CP would allow the striker to leave if a team came in with an offer of around £65million for the striker - giving Arsenal hope of tying up a deal.

Sporting CP anger

Sporting CP president Federico Varandas did not take kindly to talk of Gyokeres being sold on the cheap. Having stayed quiet for so long, he took umbrage in a press conference.

He said: "I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for €60million (£51.4million) plus + €10million (£8.6million) [in add-ons] because I never promised him that. To this day, Sporting has not had an offer for Viktor Gyokeres, neither today nor last season."

Gyokeres revolt

Reports in Portugal stated that Gyokeres was left disappointed by that statement from the Sporting CP president.

In fact, reports stated that the player would not return to pre-season training until the situation was resolved, with talk of him going on strike and never wearing the Sporting shirt again.

He did, however, seem to quell that story with an Instagram post that said: "There's a lot of talk at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right."

Player wants Arsenal

Gyokeres is understood to be keen on a move to Arsenal above all others, with talk of rejecting a move to Juventus and turning down the opportunity to reunite with former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim at Manchester United too.

The striker is reportedly ready to wait for Arsenal, who had seemingly set their sights on Sesko instead, to complete a deal this summer and according to talkSPORT he has told friends and family he expects to move to north London.
