Liverpool have sanctioned the permanent transfer of 22-year-old centre-back Jarell Quansah to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in a deal that guarantees the Reds an initial €30 million fee plus up to €5 million in add-ons.

Any funds received for the academy graduate registered as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability regulations.

Although the defender is currently competing at the U21 European Championships, he has already given his approval for the move.

Having signed a new five-year contract with Liverpool in October 2023, Quansah ensured his value was protected for precisely this type of opportunity.

Crucially, Liverpool have also secured a structured buy-back clause that could see Quansah return to Anfield for up to five-more years in future.

Now BILD have revealed that the buy-back clause value is worth in excess of €60m:

“Liverpool’s buy back clause for Jarell Quansah is worth more than €60m – it was the key to his move to the Bundesliga. LFC wanted at least €40m and will now get around €30m, with bonus payments to follow.”

The German outlet adds that holding power of the future of a homegrown player was particularly important for Liverpool:

“Liverpool do not want to lose their homegrown player, who has been at the club since 2008, completely and will continue to follow the defender’s development,” reporter Phillip Arens adds.

Reports indicate that a medical examination is scheduled for this week to finalize the agreement, with Quansah expected to sign a five-year contract upon completion.

He was Bayer Leverkusen’s top choice to replace the outgoing Jonathan Tah, who recently completed a free transfer to Bayern Munich.

The Warrington-born centre-back steadily climbed through every age group within the club’s youth setup, earning the captain’s armband for both the U18s in the FA Youth Cup final and the UEFA Youth League squad.

Following a productive loan spell at Bristol Rovers in early 2023 – where he made 16 appearances – Quansah earned his breakthrough into Liverpool’s senior side under Jurgen Klopp, making his Premier League debut in August 2023.

However, despite these achievements, the 22-year-old struggled to fully win over Arne Slot and has his confidence seems to have been rocked by a handful of costly mistakes during the recent 2024/25 campaign.
