Manchester United's much-anticipated summer overhaul has so far only seen one new arrival, with Matheus Cunha joining from Wolves in a £62.5million deal on June 1. The Red Devils will be paying the Brazilian's staggering release clause in three instalments over two years, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe aims to keep a tight rein on spending at Old Trafford. This is precisely why they have yet to shell out for their prime target, Bryan Mbeumo.
With Brentford demanding no less than £60m, United risk losing out on the winger, who is attracting attention from wealthier clubs. However, this could change with player exits. United are focusing on several high-profile sales, with Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho being the main attractions. Rashford, 27, is on the hunt for a new club after falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim just weeks into his tenure.
The England star made a plea to Barcelona last week, expressing his 'hope' to play alongside Barca prodigy Lamine Yamal. United are asking for £40million for Rashford, who spent the latter half of last season on loan at Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, Garnacho remained at United, despite rumours of a £75m move to Napoli in January. Speculation about his future didn't fade away, in fact, it intensified following United's Europa League final defeat.
The 20-year-old's brother accused Amorim of throwing Garnacho under the bus following his benching during last month's disappointing 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in Bilbao. It was revealed shortly afterwards that Amorim had bluntly told Garnacho to find a new club, with Napoli, Juventus, AC Milan, and Atletico Madrid—his former team—all reportedly showing interest.
Over the weekend, Garnacho upset United fans by posting a picture on social media wearing a 'Rashford 9' Villa shirt while on holiday. However, these two aren't the only strikers facing potential exit.
Antony was loaned out to Real Betis in January, a move which has breathed new life into his career. The £86m disappointment managed to score nine goals and provide five assists, leading Betis to express interest in making the deal permanent.
However, the La Liga side are hesitant to meet United's reported £43m asking price, leaving Antony in a state of uncertainty. Similarly, no buyer has been found for Jadon Sancho.
The former Borussia Dortmund star had a difficult loan spell at Chelsea, who even paid the Red Devils £5m not to make his move permanent. Dortmund have been keeping an eye on Sancho, who hasn't yet worked with Amorim, and he's also been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.
Tyrell Malacia, who was loaned out halfway through the season, is not expected to be signed permanently by Dutch heavyweights PSV Eindhoven. However, the forgotten left-back is likely to attract other interest, with Benfica having nearly secured his signature in January before the deal fell through.
United are open to entertaining offers for all squad members, though some are held in higher regard by Amorim than others. Players such as Leny Yoro, Bruno Fernandes and Amad are seen as valuable assets, while they're hesitant to offload a forward, possibly Rasmus Hojlund, without securing a replacement first, amid links with Viktor Gyokeres.
