Ex-Liverpool boss already told Arne Slot all he needs to know about Marc Guehi

Marc Guehi could well be Liverpool’s next target in the summer transfer window, and he would arrive at Anfield with plenty of glowing reviews.

Having already secured Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, the Reds look set to add Milos Kerkez very soon as the Bournemouth defender flies in for his medical. Arne Slot and Richard Hughes might not be done there either, with some big business still being touted.

Guehi is the latest name to have found himself being strongly linked with a move to Merseyside. The Crystal Palace defender is no stranger to links with Liverpool, although with Jarell Quansah heading to Bayer Leverkusen, the Reds may be stepping up their interest.

The 24-year-old has just a year remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park, and there does seem to be an acceptance that Palace will have to cash in this summer or risk losing him for nothing next year.

That might well play into Liverpool’s hands, opening up the possibility of securing Guehi in a cut-price deal. If that is the case, Slot has been given every reason to believe he’ll adding another major star to the ranks.

Manchester City’s Phil Foden has already painted an exciting picture of his England teammate, and former Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is also in no doubt about his ability.

Talking up his chances of becoming an England regular before Euro 2024, then-Palace boss Hodgson said in November 2023: "Marc Guehi has more than established himself as someone that Gareth [Southgate] is going to need going forward.

“The way he’s been going it might be a question of people knocking him off his spot rather than him knocking someone else off their spot.”

Hodgson added: "We’re really pleased with Marc. Since he came to the club he’s just gone from strength to strength and I'm pretty sure all the things we appreciate with him and admire about him wont be un-noticed in the England set-up.”

Granted, Liverpool fans may not care too much about one of their players becoming a success with England, and Hodgson’s opinions might not be taken with too much gusto given his disastrous spell in charge at Anfield.

But his comments do point to just how highly Guehi has been rated for years now - it’s worth remembering that, at 24, he still has two or three years to go before he can be considered to be at his peak.

What’s more, with doubts creeping in over Ibrahima Konate’s future, getting a defender in who is ready to step straight into a high-pressure environment has become even more of a priority for Liverpool, and Guehi certainly did that last summer, helping England reach the final of Euro 2024.

Whether a deal for Guehi can be reached remains to be seen, but there would be little doubt that Liverpool would be getting one of the Premier League's hottest properties should it follow up on its interest.
