Newcastle United's hopes of landing Real Madrid sensation Arda Guler on loan hang very much with Xabi Alonso.

The Turkish wonderkid's future at the Bernabeu was in doubt under previous boss Carlo Ancelotti, with the 20-year-old not getting as much gametime as he would have liked under the Italian.

He has been linked with a loan move away from Spain this summer, with Newcastle, Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen all credited with interest in the forward.

United are keen to strengthen the right-hand side of their forward line, having moved away from interest in Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo after hearing his wage demands.

However Alonso seems more willing to play Guler, with the youngster featuring in two Club World Cup games for Madrid this month, scoring in their 3-1 win over Pachuca on Sunday night.

The former Fenerbahce star has expressed his desire to impress the Spanish legend, but insisted that he would have to assess his future if he felt he wasn't playing enough.

"I feel more important because he always talks to me," he told Marca of Alonso. "In the first game, I played 45 minutes, so everything seems better.

"I feel good with him because he likes to control the tempo, he wants more short passes, and he sees me as a midfielder, and that's better for me."

"For now, I haven't thought about leaving, but of course, if I don't play, I'll think about everything, but for now, I'm completely focused on Real Madrid."

For his part, Alonso has been impressed with Guler's contribution, saying he's a 'special' player.

“I want Arda Güler to be close to the ball," the former Bayer Leverkusen coach said after the win over Pachuca. "He’s a special player and always helps the team play. He has an impact.”
