The upcoming movie depicts the shocking chaos that unfolded before the Republic of Ireland’s campaign at the 2002 World Cup.
McCarthy found himself at loggerheads with star player and captain Roy Keane, who flew home before a ball had even been kicked after a shocking argument.
The fallout took place when the team prepared for the tournament in Saipan ahead of travelling to South Korea for the World Cup.
Saipan also stars Éanna Hardwicke as Keane and comes from the same producers who made Kneecap and Cocaine Bear.
Despite the incident occurring over 20 years ago, the bad blood remains between Keane and McCarthy.
Ireland have not qualified for the World Cup since 2002.
McCarthy revealed his involvement in the film, explaining, “I spoke to him, to be fair to Steve, he wants to portray how it was for me and not just the script, which fair dues to him.
"I suppose they’ve given Roy the same opportunity to speak to his actor, who I’ve seen a few things by the way and he’s brilliant.”
“I thought Steve Coogan’s going to play me. I’ve got no axe to grind with him, he’ll have a script but he may as well hear how it was for me.”
