Arsenal to profit as 3 clubs in race for former Gunner with £20m release clause

Aaron Ramsdale has a relegation release clause in his Southampton contract, effectively capping the amount Arsenal can receive from his sell-on clause.

Gary Jacob reports for The Times that Aaron Ramsdale will be allowed to leave Southampton this summer, and he has a release clause of around £20m in his contract. The clause became active following Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League.

That’s important information for Arsenal, as the Gunners have a sell-on clause in Ramsdale’s deal.

It’s unlikely anyone will pay significantly more than £20m for Ramsdale’s transfer with the existence of his release clause, so the amount Arsenal can make from the sell-on is effectively capped.

The Times’ report adds that Galatasaray are interested in signing Ramsdale this summer, though it would potentially be on loan. From the Premier League, both West Ham United and Leeds United are considering a move.

Alex Crook had previously confirmed West Ham’s interest for talkSPORT, in light of Lukasz Fabianski’s departure as a free agent.

Ramsdale joined Southampton from Arsenal for an initial £18m, with £7m potentially due in bonus payments. Those add-on clauses are unlikely to be activated if the goalkeeper leaves this summer, and the Gunners have already missed out on the £1m due if the Saints avoided relegation.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper made 32 appearances for Southampton, but he couldn’t help them to avoid the drop with just 12 points.

There were many culprits behind the team’s poor campaign, but Ramsdale will be looking for a fresh start and an opportunity to prove his worth next season ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
