Sorting the goalkeeping position must be a priority for West Ham United this summer, with Lukasz Fabianski leaving and Alphonse Areola potentially following him out.
The Hammers have been linked with a host of names, but nothing has materialised from their interest.
One of the more prominent targets is Southampton shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale, but he is attracting interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray.
We have never been fans of the England international.
However, the alternative could be somehow even worse. West Ham United have ‘been considering a move for Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez’, according to The Times.
We have been wary of the possibility of signing Sanchez since it first emerged that the Hammers were considering a move to bring Chelsea goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts to East London.
Roberts and Sanchez reportedly share a father-son relationship. The pair worked with West Ham boss Graham Potter when they were at Brighton & Hove Albion.
Perhaps that relationship explains why Chelsea seem reluctant to sell or drop Sanchez despite his woeful performances in Blue.
In their last game, his atrocious kicking was on display from the first whistle.
Sanchez gave the ball away twice in the opening proceedings, putting his side under immense pressure.
His catastrophically criminal performance was so distinctly poor it drew the ire of defender Levi Colwill, who could be heard bellowing maniacally at the keeper after one sequence.
No goalkeeper made more errors leading to goals last season in the Premier League (5). He also caused two penalties.
What particular metric drew West Ham when he always has that cloud of uncertainty hanging over his head?
It is also worrying that Chelsea continue to persist with Sanchez despite Djordje Petrovic performing incredibly on loan and a young phenom like Mike Penders waiting in the wings.
Maybe (and this is a massive ‘maybe’) his relationship with the goalkeeping coach has kept him atop the pecking order at Chelsea.
West Ham should steer clear of error-prone Sanchez. He is as frustrating as they come and a genuine step back.
While he dominates the box, his decision-making remains highly suspect, and his kicking is almost amateurish.
His penchant for putting his team under pressure should deter West Ham. If anything, the Hammers should be angling for Petrovic or a two-year loan deal for Penders.
Despite being hailed as a keeper who has ‘repeatedly proved himself in the Premier League’, Sanchez is not the solution. He will only add more problems.
