Marc-Andre ter Stegen is facing an uncertain future at Barcelona following the arrival of Joan Garcia from Espanyol.
The Germany international is said to be determined to fight for his place, but the feeling is that Barcelona would rather he departed this summer.
Germany legend Lothar Mathaus has now had his say and admits it’s a tricky situation for Ter Stegen to find himself in.
“Marc-Andre ter Stegen ’s situation at FC Barcelona is uncomfortable for him. He has returned in good form after a long injury and, especially in the Nations League against France, demonstrated that he is still a world-class goalkeeper at 33,” he told Sky Sport Germany.
“But Joan Garcia, whom Barca signed from Espanyol , is nine years younger. He is already part of the Spanish national team squad and is expected to play for them in the future.”
Ter Stegen has since been linked with a move to Galatasaray, but Mathaus thinks that Manchester City could be a good option.
“Galatasaray Istanbul would be one of several options. Galatasaray has underlined its ambitions by signing Sane and will play in the Champions League next season,” he added.
Six English clubs will be playing there next season, and none of them have a goalkeeper strong enough to say, “Ter Stegen wouldn’t be a reinforcement for us.”
“I don’t know what Manchester City’s plans are, but I think they’re not too happy with Ederson. I think Ter Stegen could definitely be a goalkeeper for the Citizens for the next three or four years.”
Manchester City were one of several clubs linked with a move for Joan Garcia before he joined Barca, although Pep Guardiola has since played down talk that Ederson could move this summer.
