Travis Hunter signs rookie deal with Jaguars (even though it was never an issue)

One overlooked storyline surrounding the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason was when two-way star Travis Hunter would sign his rookie deal. The issue stemmed from the fact that he's expected to play corner and receiver full-time in the NFL. Fortunately, the situation won't linger into training camp as the Jags have taken care of business.

The Jags announced that they have reached an agreement with Hunter. Because he'll play two ways, they made two different posts on social media. One that describes him as a wide receiver, and another where he's listed as a cornerback.

It's the standard four-year contract with a fifth-year option that first-round selections get. They didn't reveal details about the deal, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that it's for four years with a guaranteed value of $46.6 million with a $30 million signing bonus.

For comparison, last year's second overall selection, Jayden Daniels, got a guaranteed four-year deal worth $37.75 million with $24.3 million in guarantees.

It's also worth noting that the only thing players can negotiate is how the money is distributed and offset clauses that could potentially void guaranteed money. That's the reason first-round selection Sheman Stewart hasn't reached an agreement with the Cincinnati Bengals yet.

With Hunter getting a deal, Stewart and cornerback Jahdae Barron (Denver Broncos) are the only 2025 first-round picks that remain unsigned.

Travis Hunter can now focus on becoming a game-changer for the Jaguars

Just days before Travis Hunter signed his rookie deal, Ian Rapoport said that he didn't expect him to hold out. And when asked about the issue, head coach Liam Coen told the local media that he lets general manager James Gladstone deal with that.

Circling back to Shemar Stewart, he's in a standoff with the Cincinnati Bengals. If they don't reach an agreement before training camp, he'll miss out on valuable reps. This will prevent him from being fully ready for the season opener. The Jags won't have to worry about that kind of situation. Instead, Travis Hunter will get to build off of a strong offseason.

The former Colorado Buffalo began his onboarding process on offense but began to see time at cornerback during mandatory minicamp. One reason was that he gets more from walkthroughs than from the classroom.

Now, it's not a given that Hunter will play wide receiver or cornerback full-time as a rookie. The team's brass will have to adjust his development and usage on the fly. Having said that, the Jags won't have to worry about him using valuable practice time in training camp.
