The real reason FIFA use Superior Player of the Match rather than Player or Man of the Match at …

Ilkay Gundogan was named Superior Player of the Match after starring for Manchester City against Al Ain on Monday morning.

The German scored twice as Pep Guardiola watched his side record a 6-0 win in Group G at the FIFA Club World Cup in Atalanta, which booked Manchester City a spot in the Round of 16.

However, the use of the term Superior Player of the Match has got a lot of people talking, as it differs from the more traditionally used phrases, such as Man of the Match or Player of the Match.

FIFA are not just trying to be quirky for the sake of it – but instead simply displaying a sponsor.

Why Ilkay Gundogan was branded Superior Player of the Match

FIFA have paired up with Michelob ULTRA as a sponsor at the Club World Cup, hence the reason for the strange Player of the Match award.

Michelob ULTRA describe their beverage as a Superior Light Beer in official advertising, and opted to go with that particular adjective as a way of muscling in on the Player of the Match award.

Gundogan seemed nonplussed either way as he gratefully collected his award after hammering Al Ain, becoming the second Manchester City player to be named Superior Player of the Match at the FIFA Club World Cup after Phil Foden.

Ilkay Gundogan shows Pep Guardiola what he can still offer to Manchester City amid exit rumours

The Manchester City No.19 turns 35 in October, and might not even see out the final 12 months of his contract.

Galatasaray want to sign Gundogan, and the man born in Gelsenkirchen is believed to be interested in a switch to Istanbul, as the signing of Tijjani Reijnders is expected to push him down the pecking order under Guardiola.

However, the Manchester City legend showed fans what he can still do for the club despite his advancing years with a stellar performance against Al Ain.

Gundogan, who Reijnders admires, received a 9.2 match rating on SofaScore – higher than any other player on the pitch – as he scored twice, completed 92% of his passes and won three ground duels in his 73 minutes of action, before being replaced by Bernardo Silva.

Of course, Al Ain are a much weaker side compared to what awaits in the Premier League, but the German clearly still knows how to sniff out goals for Manchester City.
