Legendary Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini is known for his attacking outlook. After all, his side scored a record–breaking 98 Serie A goals in the 2019-20 season as he elevate La Dea to regular Champions League competitors.

He guided the Italian outfit to Europa League glory in 2024, but it was young defender Giorgio Scalvini who emerged from that side as one of Italian football's hottest properties.

Scalvini has now been linked with a move to Newcastle, with the Magpies on the lookout for a long-term central defensive partner for Sven Botman.

United have seen the likes of Dean Huijsen move to Real Madrid, while long-term target Marc Guehi now appears destined for a transfer to Liverpool, with Scalvini emerging as a potential target.

The Italian has had his troubles with injury this season, recovering from a cruciate ligament tear in the first half of the campaign, only to see a shoulder injury rule him out from early February.

However, his form in recent seasons has been enough to generate plenty of interest in the 21-year-old, who has already won eight caps for Italy.

It was Gasperini who brought him through the ranks at the Gewiss Stadium, and speaking in 2023, he was in no doubt over his potential to become an excellent player.

"Scalvini? He is already a great player at 19," Gasperini said. "He is a leader on and off the pitch. He’s destined for greatness. Wherever you put him he has quality and class."

With Gasperini now departed for Roma, Scalvini's future remains up in the air, with interest from Newcastle and Serie A champions Napoli.

Reports in Italy suggest there could be some movement on his future in the coming day, with Atalanta expected to demand around £40m for the defender.
