The New York Jets have a brand-new looking team heading into the 2025 season. Former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is now leading the team as head coach, and a host of players have left and been added to the team.
While star wide receiver Davante Adams is now with the Los Angeles Rams, the Jets now have former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields leading the way. Fields had a decent season with the Steelers, going 4-2 before he was replaced by Russell Wilson.
Fields has had an up-and-down career thus far, but now he has a chance to rebound as a starter with the Jets. However, not everyone is buying into the idea that he can turn the franchise around.
Fields has received an unfortunate prediction ahead of training camp. According to Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon, he is "selling" the idea that the Jets can return to the postseason in 2025.
"The AFC East and conference are hell, and Fields couldn't make the cut as a passer in Chicago and Pittsburgh. I'm not entirely counting the Jets out, but it's hard to see a path unless Fields shocks the football world," Gagnon writes.
Gagnon has a point in that Fields is now on his third team in the past three seasons. The signal caller isn't a terrible player by any means, but he is up against some tough competition in the AFC, let alone the AFC East.
The Buffalo Bills will remain the favorite to win the division, unless something happens to MVP Josh Allen. The Miami Dolphins are also a big question mark heading into 2025.
The Dolphins have a multitude of players who left for other teams, and their identity remains questionable. The New England Patriots are in the same boat and have a new head coach in Mike Vrabel, which could lead to a shaky first season.
That's not to mention the Jets will presumably have to beat out the Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers, Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs, and many more for a playoff slot.
The Broncos snuck into the playoffs with a 10-6 record in 2024, but they are predicted to be even better.
New York will have to presumably post a 10-6 or better record to even be considered a playoff contender, and that might be difficult to do with a new head coach, quarterback, and more.
Fields has thrown 7,780 yards, 45 touchdowns, 31 interceptions, 61.1 completion percentage, and a 7.0 yards per catch average.
Those numbers do not inspire a ton of confidence, so Fields will have to play like a top 15 quarterback in the NFL to be taken seriously. Given his track record, that might not be the case.
