Mateo Joseph sends new message as attention turns to Leeds United transfer speculation

Leeds United striker Mateo Joseph was unlikely to have his future resolved before his Spain U21 duty concluded, but an ill-tempered defeat to England means the striker’s tournament is over early.

The Whites don’t have too many player sales from the first team to be considering as we speak, but Mateo Joseph’s future is one of those to resolve soon.

Subject to strong interest throughout 2025 from Real Betis, Leeds have a PSR and profit-related discussion to consider on the talented young striker.

An intriguing clash in the quarter finals opened up a Leeds reunion as Spain took on England in the U21 Euros on Saturday.

A feisty encounter saw two of Leeds’ former academy products come out on top over Joseph, as the Young Lions ran out 3-1 winners thanks to goals from James McAtee, Harvey Elliott, and Elliot Anderson.

After the Nottingham Forest man converted from the spot to seal victory and progress to the semi-finals, Spain’s Marc Pubill lunged in on Tino Livramento to spark a huge brawl in which Cresswell and Joseph were right in the mix, as the Spaniard was pictured trying to push his former Leeds teammate away from the fray.

That result sees Joseph’s summer tournament come to a close with now all the attention on whether he will be a part of the plans at Elland Road next season.

Both Real Betis and Strasbourg are strongly linked with a move to sign the striker this summer, with Leeds having to make a decision on the striker who could bring in a significant PSR profit, while going on record to state his desire for more playing time next season.

He posted this message on Instagram after being dumped out of the U21 Euros at the quarter-final stage:

“A very special stage for me closes. It wasn’t the ending we wanted, but I’ll stick with everything we’ve experienced in this European and everything it means to have been part of this group.

“Thank you to my teammates, staff and everyone who has been supporting since day 1. Wearing this shirt has been an enormous pride and an opportunity I will never forget!

“I learned so much in every rally, in every match, in every good and not-so-good moment. Now it’s time to keep working and growing. Always with the same excitement and desire to keep improving. Thank you @sefutbol.”

Decision time for Leeds United and Mateo Joseph as busy July looms

Leeds and Joseph were never going to decide on his future as he prepared for these European Championships, because all of his focus was on that, and Leeds could have seen his value rise with a good tournament.

However, after one well-taken goal, some decent performances and a missed penalty, it’s hard to say if his stock has risen or dropped at all.

With that in mind, you would expect next month will see Leeds come to a definitive decision on the striker, and a sale might be tempting in order to reinvest in the starting lineup.
