VanVleet joined the Rockets two offseasons ago, bringing much-needed experience to a young team that had struggled to find its footing. His arrival, along with that of forward Dillon Brooks and head coach Ime Udoka, transformed Houston from a rebuilding franchise into a Western Conference contender. The Rockets recently completed a strong season, finishing second in the West with 52 wins and returning to the playoffs.
After a first-round playoff exit, Houston responded decisively. In a bold trade, the Rockets acquired superstar forward Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, and the 10th overall pick in the upcoming draft. The addition of Durant elevates Houston’s ceiling, and the organization is now focused on solidifying its supporting cast around him.
VanVleet remains a key piece of that puzzle. Though he appeared in just 60 games this past season, he provided leadership and solid production, averaging 14.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. His efficiency, playmaking, and veteran presence continue to be valued by the Rockets’ front office.
According to multiple reports, both sides are motivated to reach a new agreement when free agency opens. Talks are expected to focus on structuring a deal that maintains Houston’s salary cap flexibility. The team is reportedly aiming to stay under the NBA’s first apron to allow for further roster moves and future extensions for young core players like Amen Thompson, Tari Eason, and Jabari Smith Jr.
VanVleet is represented by agent Rich Paul, and he has expressed a desire to remain in Houston. The deadline for his team option decision was recently extended to June 29 to allow both sides time to finalize a new agreement.
