Man Utd have now entered talks to sign "world-class" €60m playmaker - report

Manchester United plan to bolster their frontline with multiple signings this summer.

The Red Devils have already secured the services of Wolverhampton Wanderers ace Matheus Cunha.

They are also in direct negotiations with Brentford for the potential transfer of Bryan Mbeumo.

Amidst this, L’Equipe claim that United have held initial talks for Chelsea playmaker Christopher Nkunku.

The Red Devils have made contact with the player’s entourage regarding a possible summer move.

However, it is unclear whether the club will follow up with a formal approach to the Blues.

Man Utd should avoid signing Nkunku

Nkunku arrived at Chelsea with a big reputation from RB Leipzig in 2023. He registered 125 goal contributions from just 172 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit in all competitions.

The Frenchman has failed to replicate the feat at Chelsea. He had an injury-plagued debut campaign and barely started in the Premier League under manager Enzo Maresca last term.

The former Paris Saint-Germain graduate scored three goals and provided three assists from 27 league games. He averaged only 34 minutes per appearance for the London giants.

The France international, described as ‘world-class‘ by the Bundesliga’s official website, was guilty of missing some big chances despite his limited playing time.

In our view, United should avoid an approach for the playmaker. He will turn 28 later this year and has struggled with the transition from German to English football, similar to Jadon Sancho.

Chelsea may want to recoup most of the €60 million paid for his services to Leipzig. For such a huge outlay, United are better off purchasing Mbeumo from the Bees instead.

Mbeumo netted 20 goals and provided eight assists in the English top-flight last season. He would provide a big upgrade to the United attack ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
