Manchester United suffered from multiple VAR mistakes last season in the Premier League.

The Red Devils had their worst Premier League finish in the club’s history, 15th, getting 42 points from 38 matches. Only Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur finished between Man United and the relegation zone, and Amorim will be desperate for improvement next season.

The Premier League set up the Kay Match Incidents Panel (KMI) in 2022 in order to monitor mistakes made by referees in the Premier League. The VAR mistakes have been released from last season, and via ESPN, there were 18 mistakes last season due to VAR. But how many did Man United suffer from?

Man United lost out due to VAR

The Red Devils weren’t lucky with regards to VAR last season. The KMI has revealed that there were two mistakes that United lost out to in the Premier League, and one where they gained, meaning that overall, mistakes went against the Red Devils.

Firstly, during United’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in September, Bruno Fernandes was sent off for making a challenge on James Maddison. He was seen to lead with his studs, but he never made contact with the Spurs midfielder.

VAR didn’t intervene and overturn the decision, and so it stood, and the United captain was sent off. The KMI have now said that this was a mistake, and Fernandes shouldn’t have been sent off against Spurs. His red card was later overturned as he avoided a ban.

Secondly, United also lost out during their 2-1 defeat to West Ham in October. VAR recommended that a penalty be awarded to the Hammers after a foul by centre-back Matthijs De Ligt on striker Danny Ings. The referee initially said no penalty, but VAR overturned the decision. The KMI has now voted unanimously that this was a mistake.

United lost the game due to the penalty, and Erik Ten Hag was sacked the following day, making this VAR mistake almost more costly than any other in the Premier League last year.

There was one instance where United gained from a VAR mistake, and it came against Bournemouth in April. The Cherries’ striker Evanilson was sent off after a VAR review for a challenge on Noussair Mazraoui. It was voted that he shouldn’t have been sent off as he slipped, causing the challenge.

Who won and lost the most from VAR mistakes?

In terms of overall in the Premier League, Everton gained the most, having three mistakes go their way, and none against them. Brighton were second, gaining from three and losing out once.

Other teams that gained include Liverpool, Ipswich, Newcastle, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur. United were one of eight teams to lose out due to VAR mistakes. But they didn’t lose the most.

Fulham, Crystal Palace, Arsenal and Aston Villa also saw a net loss from VAR mistakes. Every other team neither lost out nor gained from VAR mistakes.
